How much does plastering cost per m² in 2026?

Plastering is almost always priced per square metre, and the difference between two quotes usually comes down to the finish level and the state of the wall. Below roughly 30 to 50 m² most plasterers charge a call-out minimum, because setting up and cleaning up takes the same time for one small wall as for a whole floor.

How much does plastering cost per m² in 2026?
Type of plasteringGuide price 2026What drives the difference
Wall plastering, ready for wallpaper14 to 22 euros per m²A wallpaper-ready finish may be slightly coarser, so this is the cheapest option
Wall plastering, ready for paint18 to 30 euros per m²If you are going to paint, the wall has to be genuinely flat and that takes an extra pass
Plastering a ceiling18 to 35 euros per m²Overhead work is slower and uses more material; above 3 metres add 5 to 8 euros per m²
Bathroom plastering, water-resistant70 to 150 euros per m²Water-resistant plaster and an extra finishing pass; Homedeal and Trustoo list this separately from a standard paint-ready finish

Spray plaster7 to 16 euros per m²Spraying is fast, but masking floors and frames takes most of the time
Textured finish15 to 25 euros per m²A coarser grain is more forgiving, so the substrate does not need to be perfect
Decorative plaster16 to 45 euros per m²The technique and grain size; sources disagree most widely on this item
Plastering an exterior wall35 to 85 euros per m²With reinforcing mesh you are at the top, without it at the bottom
Beton ciré or tadelakt60 to 200 euros per m²Specialist handwork in several layers, and not every plasterer offers it

Fitting corner beads2 to 6 euros per linear metreFor a straight, crisp outside corner; Trustoo and Stukadoorsclub list this separately from the m² price

Guide prices for the Netherlands in 2026, collected on 15 August 2026. Stukadoorsclub quotes its amounts excluding VAT, Homedeal and Trustoo including VAT; their ranges fall inside the same bands, so the difference disappears into ordinary market variation. Plastering work on a home older than 2 years carries 9% VAT, and for plastering that reduced rate covers the material as well.

Hourly rate

€35 - €55per hour

Call-out charge

Usually none

plasterers usually do not charge travel costs, but for a small surface of less than 30 m² many companies do apply a starting rate of around €250

What makes up the price?

Labour

by far the largest part of the bill: €35 to €55 per hour, or €650 to €750 for a day

Materials

gypsum, cement-based plaster, corner profiles and primer; for plastering in a home older than 2 years this falls under the same 9% rate as the labour

Call-out charge

usually none, but a starting rate of around €250 applies below 30 m²

Plastering a home that is older than 2 years falls under the reduced VAT rate of 9%, and unlike wallpapering and insulation that rate covers the materials too. Bricklaying and repointing are not included and are charged at 21%. The Dutch tax authority publishes the conditions that apply.

What determines the price?

  • Wall or ceiling: a ceiling costs a few euros more per m², because it is heavier and slower work
  • State of the subfloor: old, damaged or wallpapered walls must first be stripped and levelled, and that is separate work
  • New build or renovation: thin coat plaster on a straight new-build wall is much cheaper than traditional plastering on an old wall
  • Finish level: wallpaper-ready is coarser and cheaper than paint-ready, and paint-ready is what you want if you are going to use latex
  • Surface area: below 30 m² you often pay a starting rate, because the plasterer spends half a day on setup and cleaning up
  • Decorative or textured plaster: these are different techniques with their own rate
  • Occupied or empty: in an occupied home, masking and protecting floors and furniture costs €100 to €200 extra
  • Height of the room: anything above standard ceiling height means rolling scaffolds and therefore more hours

Frequently asked questions

How much does plastering cost per m²?

A smooth wall costs €18 to €22 per m², a ceiling €20 to €25 per m². Thin coat plaster on new build is cheaper, €13 to €15 per m². Below 30 m², many plasterers apply a starting rate of around €250, so for one small wall you pay relatively much.

How much does a plasterer charge per hour?

€35 to €55 per hour excluding materials, or €650 to €750 for a full day. For larger surfaces almost everyone works with a price per m², because then you know in advance where you stand.

How much does plastering a whole home cost?

An apartment of 70 m² of living space has roughly 180 to 220 m² of wall and ceiling and costs €3,600 to €5,100. A terraced house of 100 m² comes to roughly 280 to 340 m² and costs €5,600 to €7,800. Masking floors and furniture adds €100 to €200.

Wallpaper-ready or paint-ready, what do I need?

If you are going to wallpaper, wallpaper-ready is enough and that saves a few euros per m². If you are going to use latex or paint, choose paint-ready, because every imperfection comes back hard under a layer of latex. Say in advance what you are going to do with the wall, then the plasterer knows which finish to deliver.

How much does spraying latex cost?

€5 to €12 per m² for walls. Spraying is faster than rolling and gives a more even result, but the masking takes extra time. Have it done right after the plastering, while the equipment is there anyway.

How much does bricklaying a wall cost?

€75 to €180 per m², depending on the type of wall and the brick. A garden wall is at the bottom of that range, a facade or cavity wall at the top. Renewing facade pointing costs €30 to €55 per m², plus €8 to €15 per m² for grinding out the old joints.

How long does plaster need to dry?

Expect a few days to a few weeks before you can paint, depending on the thickness of the layer, the temperature and ventilation. Ask the plasterer for a drying time in writing. Painting too early is the most common mistake and causes stains and peeling paint.

Is it true that plastering is only charged 9% VAT?

Yes, and in this trade it makes a real difference. The Dutch tax authority treats plastering of homes older than 2 years as 9% work, and unlike wallpapering and insulation that rate covers the materials as well. For new builds or homes under 2 years old it is simply 21%. Note that bricklaying and repointing do not count as plastering and stay at 21%.
