Hourly rate

€45 - €75per hour

Call-out charge

€0 - €50

many carpenters charge a fixed amount for travel time or €0.25 to €0.50 per kilometre; if the job takes several days, it is usually already in the price

What makes up the price?

Labour

for a dormer, 40 to 45% of the budget goes to labour; for small work such as hanging a door, labour is almost the entire bill

Materials

30 to 35% for a dormer; for a custom cabinet the wood species determines the largest part of the price

Call-out charge

a fixed amount or €0.25 to €0.50 per kilometre, usually already included for multi-day work

This falls under the standard VAT rate of 21%, on both labour and materials. The reduced rate of 9% only applies to painting, plastering, wallpapering and the insulation of floors, walls and roofs in a home older than 2 years, plus cleaning work inside the home. If that kind of work is part of the same job, only that part is charged at 9%. The Dutch tax authority publishes the conditions that apply.

What determines the price?

  • Prefab or custom: everything that must be sawn and fitted to size takes hours, and hours are the most expensive part here
  • Wood species: softwood is the bottom of the market, solid oak or veneer easily doubles the price of a cabinet
  • State of the existing work: a crooked wall, a sagging frame or rotten wood means repairing first and only then installing
  • Working at height, such as a dormer: scaffolding, hoisting work and safety measures count
  • Whether finishing is included: plastering and painting around a new frame can make a few hundred euros difference in the quote
  • Number of pieces at once: travel costs, scaffolding and a skip are spread over the whole project, so four frames at once is cheaper per piece than four times one
  • Permit and preparation for a dormer: together with waste removal that is the last 5 to 10% of the budget
  • Region and busyness: in spring and summer the diaries are fuller and prices are rarely lower

Frequently asked questions

How much does a carpenter charge per hour?

Expect €45 to €75 per hour excluding materials. For a full day you are at €300 to €560. For jobs of more than a few hours, a daily rate or a fixed project price is usually cheaper than separate hours, and you know where you stand in advance.

How much does hanging an interior door cost?

In labour, €80 to €160 per door if the door fits the existing frame. If a new door with frame is needed, you end up at €400 to €900 including materials, and with plastering and painting at €700 to €1,200.

How much does a custom cabinet cost?

For a custom cabinet you pay on average €1,000 to €2,500. A built-in cabinet is higher, €1,500 to €4,500. If you choose solid oak or luxury veneer, it can go towards €5,000 or higher. Always ask whether installation and finishing of the edges are in the price.

How much does replacing a frame cost?

A frame including HR++ glass and installation costs €800 to €1,500 per piece. If you only have the installation done, that is €480 to €1,000 per frame, about €100 per linear metre. Replacing all frames of a terraced house comes out at €12,000 to €21,000, including dismantling and removal.

How much does installing a dormer cost?

€7,000 to €15,000, depending on the width, the material and the finishing. Prefab is cheaper than custom work. Of that amount, 40 to 45% goes to labour and 30 to 35% to materials; the rest is preparation, permit and removal.

Do I need a permit for a dormer?

That depends on your home and the position of the dormer, and the municipality decides. Check via the Omgevingsloket (environmental desk) before commissioning. Budget for preparation, permit and waste removal together being the last 5 to 10% of the costs.

What should I look for when comparing quotes?

Look at what is NOT in them. The biggest differences between two quotes are usually in the finishing, the removal of old materials and repairing what is underneath. Also ask whether the timber is dried and ordered to size, because shrinking wood is the complaint that comes back most often.

Does the reduced 9% VAT rate apply to carpentry?

No, you pay 21% VAT on this, on labour as well as materials. The reduced 9% rate is limited to painting, plastering, wallpapering and the insulation of floors, walls and roofs in a home older than 2 years, plus cleaning work inside the home. If the same professional also does that kind of work as part of your job, that part may be charged at 9%. Ask for a quote that lists the parts separately, so you can see which rate applies to what.
