How much does tiling a bathroom cost in 2026?

With tiling, most of the hours do not go into the straight surfaces but into the fitting work: corners, niches, a shower drain and the built-in tap. That is why a single bathroom costs more per square metre than tiling a whole house. Below are the labour rates, the preparation work and the total prices the cost guides list.

How much does tiling a bathroom cost in 2026?
Tiling workGuide price 2026What drives the difference
Tiler hourly rate30 to 80 euros per hourHomedeal quotes 30 to 40 euros, Klussendirect 45 to 80; specialist work sits at the top
Laying floor tiles, labour only25 to 65 euros per m²A flat substrate with a straight layout is the low end
Laying wall tiles, labour only25 to 55 euros per m²Every row has to be aligned and supported until the adhesive grips
Large format tiles, 60x60 or bigger45 to 75 euros per m²Heavy slabs that need two people and special tools
Herringbone, hexagon or mosaic60 to 95 euros per m²The number of cut corners sets the labour time, and it climbs fast here
Natural stone tiles (marble, granite, slate)25 to 160 euros per m²Marble and granite sit in the middle, slate can land at either end of that range; Trustoo and Bobex quote the same band
Tiling a bathroom including tiles50 to 150 euros per m²The tile itself is the biggest variable: from 10 euros per m² to well over 100
Small bathroom complete, around 9 m² of wall and floor800 to 2,000 eurosLabour and tiles together, with a straight layout and a clean substrate
Tiling a kitchen splashback20 to 45 euros per m²Small area, a lot of fitting around sockets and the extractor
Removing and disposing of old tiles15 to 30 euros per m²What comes off with them decides whether repair work follows
Levelling the substrate10 to 25 euros per m²On an uneven base tiling works loose and cracks, so this is not an item to cut
Renewing grout15 to 35 euros per m²Grinding out the old grout is the work; regrouting itself is quick
Waterproofing the shower corner150 to 350 eurosSealing tape and membrane behind the tiles; it belongs in the job and a good quote itemises it

Guide prices for the Netherlands in 2026, collected on 15 August 2026. Amounts exclude VAT; Klussendirect states this explicitly, Homedeal and OfferteAdviseur leave it open. Tiling carries 21% VAT. If plastering happens in the same job, that part carries 9% for a home older than 2 years.

Hourly rate

€35 - €60per hour

Call-out charge

€0 - €50

often €0.50 to €1 per kilometre, and for a multi-day job usually already included in the price per m²

What makes up the price?

Labour

the largest part of the bill for tiling: €40 to €75 per m² depending on floor or wall

Materials

the tiles themselves vary enormously, plus adhesive, grout, silicone, tile profiles and the waterproof layer under the shower

Call-out charge

often €0.50 to €1 per kilometre, usually already included for multi-day work

This falls under the standard VAT rate of 21%, on both labour and materials. The reduced rate of 9% only applies to painting, plastering, wallpapering and the insulation of floors, walls and roofs in a home older than 2 years, plus cleaning work inside the home. If that kind of work is part of the same job, only that part is charged at 9%. The Dutch tax authority publishes the conditions that apply.

What determines the price?

  • Floor or wall: wall tiles cost more labour, because every row must be aligned and supported
  • Size of the tile: large-format tiles are heavy and need two men, mosaic requires patience, and both cost more per m²
  • Laying pattern: herringbone, hexagon or mosaic can raise labour costs by up to 30%
  • State of the subfloor: levelling or repairing costs €10 to €20 per m² extra, and without a level subfloor good tiling simply will not happen
  • Number of cut corners, niches, built-in taps and shower drains: most hours go into the fitting work, not the straight surfaces
  • Waterproof finish behind the shower: that belongs in a good quote and is stated separately; if it is missing, ask about it before signing
  • Does the old tiling have to come out, and if so, what comes out from underneath
  • Surface area: one bathroom is more expensive per m² than tiling a whole home, because the setup and sealing take the same time
  • For a complete bathroom renovation: demolishing the old tiles and the sanitary ware is usually separate from the tiling quote itself. Ask about this separately, otherwise you compare two quotes that do not cover the same thing

Frequently asked questions

How much does a tiler charge per hour?

€35 to €60 per hour excluding materials. Specialist work such as large-format tiles or mosaic is at the top. For a bathroom or floor, most tilers prefer a price per m², because then you know in advance what it will be.

How much does laying tiles cost per m²?

Floor tiles €40 to €60 per m² in labour, wall tiles €50 to €75 per m². For a simple bathroom with a straight lay, tiles of 30x60 or 60x60 and a clean subfloor, expect €45 to €55 per m² in labour.

How much does tiling a bathroom cost?

A small bathroom of 6 to 8 m² costs €800 to €1,500 including tiles and labour. A large bathroom of 10 to 15 m² comes out at €1,200 to €2,500. Per m² including tiles, expect €55 to €115.

How much does renewing grout cost?

€25 to €45 per m². Grinding out the old grout is the work; the regrouting itself goes quickly. Most tilers charge silicone joints separately, around €8 to €12 per linear metre. For mould in the silicone, just replacing the silicone is often enough.

Why is herringbone or mosaic so much more expensive?

Because the number of cut corners determines the labour time. A special laying pattern can add up to 30% on top of the labour costs. If you want the pattern but the budget is tight, lay it only on the floor or on one wall and keep the rest straight.

Does the subfloor need to be levelled first?

For an old floor, usually yes. Expect €10 to €20 per m². A good tiler says this in advance, because tiling on an uneven subfloor will loosen and crack, and then you pay twice.

How much does underfloor heating under the tiles cost?

Electric underfloor heating costs €800 to €3,000, depending on the surface area. It is smartest to include it with the tiling work, because the floor has to come up anyway.

Does the reduced 9% VAT rate apply to tiling?

No, you pay 21% VAT on this, on labour as well as materials. The reduced 9% rate is limited to painting, plastering, wallpapering and the insulation of floors, walls and roofs in a home older than 2 years, plus cleaning work inside the home. If the same professional also does that kind of work as part of your job, that part may be charged at 9%. Ask for a quote that lists the parts separately, so you can see which rate applies to what.
