How much does an electrician cost in 2026?
An electrician charges €40 to €85 per hour in 2026, excluding materials and VAT. Small jobs such as adding a socket cost €55 to €80, while replacing the fuse box averages around €715. These are guide prices: the exact price depends on the state of your installation and only becomes clear with a tailored quote.
How much does an electrician cost per hour in 2026?
An electrician's hourly rate depends mostly on who turns up: a sole trader, an installation firm, or a specialist for charge points and home automation. Individual jobs usually come as a total price including materials and fitting. Both are set out below.
| Job or rate | Guide price 2026 | What drives the difference |
|---|---|---|
| Sole trader hourly rate | 40 to 65 euros per hour | Lower overheads, usually one person with a van |
| Installation firm hourly rate | 55 to 85 euros per hour | More overhead, but a bigger schedule and often faster availability |
| Specialist hourly rate (charge point, home automation, heat pump) | 80 to 120 euros per hour | Certification and specialist tools; here you pay for the paperwork |
| Call-out charge | 20 to 70 euros per visit | Distance, and whether a second visit is needed for materials |
| Adding a socket | 55 to 80 euros each | Flush mounting with chasing costs more than surface mounting along the skirting |
| Wiring a switch | 75 to 200 euros each | A two-way switch or dimmer needs extra wiring |
| Adding a light point | 100 to 300 euros per point | Distance to the consumer unit and whether a ceiling has to be opened |
| Running cable | 30 to 80 euros per metre | Through an existing conduit is cheap, through a solid wall or floor is expensive |
| Extra circuit in the consumer unit | 80 to 150 euros per circuit | If there is still room in the unit this is half an hour's work |
| Replacing a consumer unit, single phase | 365 to 550 euros | Whether the new unit fits where the old one sat without extra wiring |
| Replacing a consumer unit, three phase | 550 to 880 euros | More circuits, more RCDs and more cabling; an extended job runs to 1,400 euros |
| Home charge point, single phase including installation | 1,300 to 1,800 euros | A three-phase unit with consumer unit work costs 2,500 to 5,000 euros |
| Fitting a wireless smoke alarm | 50 to 100 euros per unit | Including the device itself; mandatory on every floor of a home since 2022 |
| NEN 1010 inspection of the installation | 150 to 400 euros | Size of the installation and the number of circuits being checked |
| Replacing a residual current device on its own | from 95 euros | Including the part and fitting; often an urgent job after a fault |
Guide prices for the Netherlands in 2026, collected on 15 August 2026. The hourly rates exclude VAT and materials, as Homedeal quotes them. The job and project prices are totals including materials and fitting. Electrical work carries 21% VAT.
Hourly rate
€40 - €85per hour
Call-out charge
€25 - €50
depending on the distance to the electrician
What makes up the price?
Labour
hourly rate of €40 to €85, the largest part of small jobs
Materials
billed separately: from a few euros for a socket to hundreds for a fuse box
Call-out charge
usually €25 to €50 per visit
This falls under the standard VAT rate of 21%, on both labour and materials. The reduced rate of 9% only applies to painting, plastering, wallpapering and the insulation of floors, walls and roofs in a home older than 2 years, plus cleaning work inside the home. If that kind of work is part of the same job, only that part is charged at 9%. The Dutch tax authority publishes the conditions that apply.
What determines the price?
- Age and state of the existing installation
- Number of circuits and the type of fuse box (single-phase or three-phase)
- Accessibility of the wiring: surface-mounted is faster and cheaper than recessed with chasing
- Urgency: a fault at the weekend or in the evening carries a surcharge
- Region: rates in the Randstad are often somewhat higher than elsewhere
- Whether a NEN 1010 inspection is required for handover or insurance
- Accreditation: an electrician affiliated with a trade association such as Techniek Nederland works to the applicable NEN standards and is more often insured for their own mistakes; that matters more than a few euros difference in hourly rate

How much does an electrician charge per hour?
Expect €40 to €85 per hour excluding materials and VAT. Starting self-employed electricians are at the bottom of that range, larger installation companies at the top.
How much does replacing a fuse box cost?
On average between €365 and €1,400, with most people ending up around €715. If the new box fits in the old spot without extra wiring, the job is often done in 3 to 4 hours.
How much does adding a socket cost?
A new socket in a new spot usually costs €55 to €80, because it requires chasing and cabling. Replacing a socket in the same spot can be done from €25.
How much does installing a home charge point cost?
Expect €1,500 to €3,500 all-in, including the charge point itself. If your fuse box is outdated or full, add another €300 to €500 for the adjustments.
Should I hire a certified electrician?
That is strongly recommended, for your safety and for your insurance. Ask for a NEN 1010-compliant handover, especially for larger jobs such as a new fuse box or charge point.
What are an electrician's travel costs?
Usually €25 to €50, depending on the distance. Some electricians already include this in their hourly rate, so feel free to ask when requesting a quote.
Does the reduced 9% VAT rate apply to electrical work?
No, you pay 21% VAT on this, on labour as well as materials. The reduced 9% rate is limited to painting, plastering, wallpapering and the insulation of floors, walls and roofs in a home older than 2 years, plus cleaning work inside the home. If the same professional also does that kind of work as part of your job, that part may be charged at 9%. Ask for a quote that lists the parts separately, so you can see which rate applies to what.
