How much does a moving company cost in 2026?

A moving company costs €350 to €2,800 in 2026, depending on the size of your home. If you prefer an hourly rate, expect €35 to €110 per hour, depending on the team size. The ranges per home type are wide, and that is not sloppiness: the difference between bare transport and a move with lift, dismantling and packing is easily a factor of two for the same house. These are guide prices: the amount of belongings, the distance and whether a lift is needed determine the final price, which follows from the quote.

How much does a moving company cost in 2026?

Movers price by cubic metre, not by floor area, and that explains why two quotes for the same house can be so far apart. So always ask how many m³ they estimated and which items are included. Below are the total prices per property type and the individual line items.

How much does a moving company cost in 2026?
Move or serviceGuide price 2026What drives the difference

Three-room flat or terraced house, complete900 to 1,800 eurosUsually 60 to 70 m³ of contents; an attic on top pushes it up quickly

Move to another province, surcharge200 to 500 euros extraThe extra travel time of the crew and truck, not the kilometres themselves
Piano move200 to 350 eurosA separate charge on top of the regular move, because of the weight and the specialist lifting and transport work
Small office move850 to 1,500 eurosSimilar to a home move, but often scheduled outside office hours and so more expensive per hour
Renting or buying moving boxes1 to 2 euros per box to rent, 2 to 4 euros per box to buyRenting is cheaper if you return them on time; buying is handier if you want to keep them

Guide prices for the Netherlands in 2026, collected on 15 August 2026. Moving.nl quotes its hourly rates excluding VAT; Sirelo and OfferteAdviseur leave the VAT status open. A house move carries 21% VAT. The ranges are wide because cost guides disagree about what is included: transport only is the low end, with hoist, dismantling and packing the high end.

Hourly rate

€35 - €110per hour

Call-out charge

€20 - €150

on average €20 to €50 per visit; beyond the first 20 kilometres, many companies also charge €0.50 to €1 per kilometre

What makes up the price?

Labour

the team and the hours they need, the largest part of the bill

Materials

moving van, boxes and moving blankets, a relatively small share

Call-out charge

on average €20 to €50, and beyond the first 20 kilometres often €0.50 to €1 per kilometre extra

This falls under the standard VAT rate of 21%, on both labour and materials. The reduced rate of 9% only applies to painting, plastering, wallpapering and the insulation of floors, walls and roofs in a home older than 2 years, plus cleaning work inside the home. If that kind of work is part of the same job, only that part is charged at 9%. The Dutch tax authority publishes the conditions that apply.

What determines the price?

  • Amount of belongings, often expressed in cubic metres: that is the measure the moving company itself uses, not your floor area
  • Number of floors and whether the building has a lift
  • Distance between the old and the new home: to another province costs €200 to €500 extra
  • Whether you add a packing service
  • What is exactly in the quote: for the same home, bare transport versus full service easily differs by a factor of two, which explains why price guides diverge so much
  • Day of the week and season: midweek and outside the high season saves up to 20%
  • Heavy or fragile items such as a piano or safe

Frequently asked questions

Can I get moving costs reimbursed for a medical indication?

Sometimes. If you have to move because of a medical limitation, for example because your home is not wheelchair-friendly, you can apply for a Wmo moving allowance from your municipality. That usually lies between €2,500 and €4,000, depending on the municipality. If you have a low income and the move is unforeseen, for example due to a divorce or crisis situation, special assistance can be an option. Ask the Wmo desk of your municipality in advance, because applying afterwards usually no longer works.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

That depends on the team size: a single mover with a van costs €35 to €55 per hour, a team of 3 movers with a van €70 to €110 per hour.

How much does a complete move cost?

For a studio you pay €350 to €1,500, for a two-room home €550 to €1,800, for a three-room home €900 to €2,200 and for a family home €1,200 to €2,800, including the moving team and the van. These ranges are wide because price guides disagree about what is in the price: only driving your belongings from A to B is the bottom, with lift, dismantling and packing you are at the top.

Why do prices for the same home diverge so much?

Because two things are mixed up. The first is the volume: moving companies charge in cubic metres, and a studio can be 15 m³ or 40 m³. The second is what is included: bare transport, or also dismantling, packing and a moving lift. So ask every quote how many m³ has been estimated and which parts are included, and only then compare.

Is a move midweek cheaper?

Often yes. Tuesday or Wednesday are usually the cheapest days, and outside the high season (summer, end of the month) rates differ by up to about 20%.

How much does a packing service cost on top?

Expect €200 to €600 extra, depending on the size of your belongings. If it is charged per hour, you are looking at €25 to €40 per packer per hour, excluding boxes and protective material. Handy if you have little time yourself.

How much does a moving lift cost?

Including operator €90 to €120 per hour. If you rent it for a whole day, you pay €200 to €300 for a lift up to 20 metres high, €350 to €450 up to 30 metres, and for very tall buildings it goes up to €600. A moving lift may only be used by a certified operator, so that is always in the price.

Are travel costs separate?

Sometimes. On average it is €20 to €50 per visit, and beyond the first 20 kilometres many companies also charge €0.50 to €1 per kilometre. If you move to another province, add €200 to €500 for the extra distance and travel time. Some moving companies already include this in their total price, so ask about it.

How far in advance should I book a moving company?

Preferably 4 to 6 weeks in advance. In busy periods such as summer or around the end of the month, it is better to book even earlier.

Does the reduced 9% VAT rate apply to a house move?

No, you pay 21% VAT on this, on labour as well as materials. The reduced 9% rate is limited to painting, plastering, wallpapering and the insulation of floors, walls and roofs in a home older than 2 years, plus cleaning work inside the home. If the same professional also does that kind of work as part of your job, that part may be charged at 9%. Ask for a quote that lists the parts separately, so you can see which rate applies to what.
