How much does sun protection cost in 2026?
A screen costs €350 to €600 per window including installation in 2026. Electric shutters are €500 to €1,200 per window; a manual PVC shutter is available from €200 to €400. Installation is a large part of that price: for screens it is even more than half. These are guide prices: the real price mainly depends on the width of your windows, the operation and whether a facade box is needed.
What does a sun protection specialist cost per hour and per m2?
Guide prices per type of job. What you pay follows from the quote; the condition of the work decides most of it.
| Type of job | Guide price 2026 | What makes the difference |
|---|---|---|
| Screen, manual | €350 - €500 per window | including installation |
| Screen, electric | €450 - €750 per window | motor and wall switch cost €100 to €160 extra per screen |
| PVC shutter, manual | €200 - €400 per window | |
| Aluminium shutter, electric | €500 - €1.200 per window | the top applies to large windows and versions with burglary resistance RC2 |
| Loose installation of a shutter | €100 - €300 per shutter | if you already have the sun protection yourself |
| Blinds or roller blinds inside | €60 - €250 per window | strongly dependent on size and material |
| Hanging or shortening curtains | €40 - €90 per hour |
Hourly rate
€45 - €75per hour
Call-out charge
€0 - €60
measuring is free and without obligation at most sun protection companies; travel is only charged separately for a loose repair
What makes up the price?
Labour
roughly 35 to 60% of the quote; for screens the installation part is the largest
Materials
roughly 40 to 60%, including motor and operation
Call-out charge
usually 0%, measuring is free
This falls under the standard VAT rate of 21%, on both labour and materials. The reduced rate of 9% only applies to painting, plastering, wallpapering and the insulation of floors, walls and roofs in a home older than 2 years, plus cleaning work inside the home. If that kind of work is part of the same job, only that part is charged at 9%. The Dutch tax authority publishes the conditions that apply.
What determines the price?
- The width of the window: above about three metres, the fabric and tube construction becomes heavier and therefore more expensive
- Operation: manual, electric with a switch, or with remote control and app
- Inside or outside: exterior sun protection stops the heat before the glass and works better, but costs more
- Built-in or surface-mounted: a shutter in a facade box is neater but requires more work
- Burglary resistance: a shutter with RC2 certification clearly costs more
- Height and accessibility: working on an upper floor requires a ladder lift or scaffolding
- Number of windows at once: the second and third are cheaper per piece, because the trip and measuring are already there

What is better against the heat: inside or outside?
Outside, with distance. Exterior sun protection stops the sun rays before they pass through the glass and therefore saves much more heat than a roller blind or blinds on the inside. Interior sun protection is cheaper and mainly helps against bright light and being seen in.
How much does a screen cost including installation?
Expect €350 to €600 per window. If you choose electric, add €100 to €160 per screen for the motor and operation. With screens it is striking that installation is a larger part of the bill than the product itself, so always ask for a price including installation.
Do I need a permit for sun protection?
For ordinary sun protection at the back, usually not. On a facade bordering a public road, at a listed building or in a protected townscape that can be different, and some municipalities or homeowners associations have rules about colour. Do the permit check on your own address before ordering.
Can I have sun protection fitted at a rental home?
Not without permission from the landlord, because holes are drilled in the facade. Ask for this in writing in advance. Some housing associations install sun protection themselves for a small rent increase, which often works out cheaper than having it done yourself.
How long does sun protection last?
The fabric of a screen or awning often lasts ten to fifteen years, the construction and the motor longer. An aluminium shutter reaches twenty years or more with normal maintenance. The fabric can be replaced separately, so a worn screen does not automatically mean a new installation.
Does the reduced 9% VAT rate apply to installing sun protection?
No, you pay 21% VAT on this, on labour as well as materials. The reduced 9% rate is limited to painting, plastering, wallpapering and the insulation of floors, walls and roofs in a home older than 2 years, plus cleaning work inside the home. If the same professional also does that kind of work as part of your job, that part may be charged at 9%. Ask for a quote that lists the parts separately, so you can see which rate applies to what.
